I will explore the themes from this literary period in later chapters of this work. At this stage I merely wish to register the first signs of a religious discourse behind the scenes of Foucault’s wider studies. It is this discourse, previously ignored in Foucault studies, which this work seeks to recover. In OT Foucault returned to the broad historical-critical perspective found in the study of madness by dividing Western history into three discontinuous periods, the Renaissance, the Classical age and the Modern period, each determined by different structures of thought or ‘epistemes’.

2 What we find in bringing together the religious strands of Foucault’s work in this way is a critique of religion based on the politics of what can be said and what cannot be said in the religious domain. His work can therefore be seen as an attempt to identify the underlying forces which control and shape the religious ‘subject’ and as an exercise to uncover the silenced and subjugated discourses of religion. While Foucault never formulated such a clear position about his overall work on religion, my subtextual reworking takes its inspiration from the centrality of silence within his own writings.
