The shallow channel flowing through the marshes of wild rice connected the lake’s upper and lower sections for boat travel. Designed and built in 1874 by Capt. Nathaniel Harrison for Capt. Charles May, the May Queen was launched in Wayzata and operated by Capt. William Rockwell. It steamed around the lake, carrying up to 75 people, until exploding in 1879, injuring several passengers.

It began with 12 charter members and was officially called the Congregational Church of Christ in Wayzata. In 1882, the members purchased a bell from Clinton Meneely Bell Company for $80. In 1911, a new church was designed by Harry Wild Jones, incorporating the older wooden building into the new structure.
