Example text

Where the idea and conception of Information Society fit rather well in the Enlightenment character of Western thought, with an emphasis on rationality and progress and building on the main institutional traits of Western society, postmodernity consists of a transformation of these key Western notions and institutions beyond recognition. Although the notion of postmodernity raised significant support, criticism and debate for some time, also here the indication post was not there to stay. In this chapter, we will especially explore ideas on the Information Society and how these ideas transformed into the Information Age literature.

Hence, the emphasis in analysing informational governance developments in this volume will be on the informational nodes, hubs and highways of our Information Society, or, in other words, within information-rich environments. It goes without saying that within the different (geographical) settings of the Information Society these informational modes diverge somewhat, as a result of, among others, the (national) cultural backgrounds, the policy styles and culture and the economic structure. Finland with its advanced informational technologies, the United States with transnational commercial empires dominating the media, the Netherlands with its relatively good access of nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) to environmental governance and Japan with a not too transparent policy culture will all have their particularities in informational governance.

The Information Society adherents have been accused of using data that is too aggregated to distinguish different kinds of informational activities and jobs. Do all employees in the service sectors or even in the informational organisations really perform informational work? But it is not just quantitative economic indicators that have taken a central position in the economic arguments on the Information Society. Charles Leadbeater (1999), for instance, especially looked into what this occupational change and the increasing importance of information means in qualitative terms.
