The group was not an easy one to be part of and encouragement and reassurance became our priority in our discussions of each other’s work. Looking back, having written this chapter, we wonder if a more questioning stance might have led us to a greater understanding of the countertransference issues, described with hindsight in our commentaries. APPROACH TO WRITING THE CHAPTER In writing the chapter we wanted to include feedback given by the group members, to consider how their memories of the group corresponded to or differed from those of the therapists, and to see if the responses would shed any light on some of the things still puzzling us about the group.

During the course of the group described, the team was also evolving. We were finding that, although our theoretical perspectives differed, we shared views on the ethics of practice and an interest in trying to develop a service which was user-friendly and respectful of people’s rights and wishes (see also Chapters 2 and 12). 34 PART 2: ART THERAPY AT WORK BACKGROUND TO THE GROUP Referrals coming in to the Arts Therapies Department indicated that there may be a need for a relationships group, but as we did not have enough possible members, further referrals were sought by sending out information about the proposed group, its aims and who might benefit.

In the past, I have used the services of care workers, mobility aides, key workers and art therapy assistants depending on availability.
