In our order of things though, Section One seeks to rethink the meaning of ‘economy’, broadening our understanding of the term to include questions of culture, gender and power.
So, for example, while the theoretical and epistemological uncertainties triggered by the collapse of the post-war boom in the early 1970s might be regretted, it is important to recall the very exceptionalism of that particular phase of political and economic history and the economic geographies through which it took place. Moreover, the view taken from the heart of Western economies (built on the profits of empire, protectionism and military-economic supremacy) is necessarily exceptional. Although imperialism, trade and production have drawn links between peoples across the globe, integrating the histories of one place with those of another, the uneven 34 nature of power and experience makes economic geographies very particular to place.
But in all these cases, there is no one-way economization of cultural practice; economic practice and product is also reworked as it gets entangled in cultural life. An emphasis on the capitalist colonization of culture also runs the risk of equating the economic and the capitalistic.
