As these tribes integrate further with Western culture, they increasingly accept Christianity, becoming ever more unified under a common religion. MacDonald argues further that 90 per cent of Melanesians identify themselves as Christian, while at the same time they continue to affirm the traditions of their ancestors. Most Melanesians use both indigenous and Christian ritual and mythology when confronting their daily concerns about health, wealth, and fertility. In negotiating regional and national concerns, Melanesians tend to appeal to global Christian “norms,” which they see as extensions of indigenous wisdom.
