The delay range producing diffuse lateralization is of interest because it appears possible to hear either lateralization to the leading ear or a pitch equivalent to that of a sinusoidal tone of 1/r Hz (where r is the time delay in sec), but not both. Fourcin (1965,1970) used a variety of stimuli which permitted his listeners to hear this interaural delay pitch. The simplest condition involved broad-band noise from two generators delivered to each ear: the noise from one generator was presented diotically (identical presentation in each ear), while the noise from the second generator had an interaural delay of a few milliseconds.
Thus, once acoustic intensity differences were translated to neural time differences, intensity might drop out as a separate factor, leaving lateralization based almost entirely upon interaural time differences. However, subsequent studies by Whitworth and Jeffress (1961), Hafter and Jeffress (1968), and Hafter and Carrier (1972) have shown that separate images—one based on time and one based on intensity—may be perceived by listeners with sufficient training. It should be kept in mind that headphoneinduced opposition of intensity and temporal cues is not found in nature, so that considerable experience was needed with these novel relations before separation of intensity from temporal contributions could be achieved by listeners.
