If the picture of the neuron is projected onto a plane, as it necessarily is when it is drawn with the camera Iucida, information about the third dimension is lost. This information can be obtained if the movement of the microdrive of the microscope is recorded during the drawing procedure. Simple geometry will then suffice to calculate the true length of the fibre from the length of its projection. We did not have the equipment to do this in a routine way, as other laboratories have, and also thought it unnecessary to measure the length of every branch if all we were after was the sum total of their lengths.

Finally, we measured the density of the axonal fibre population on reduced silver preparations (Fig. 20). This was originally intended to act as a check on the selectivity and completeness of a stain developed by V. Staiger in our laboratory, a modification of the old Bielschowsky procedure requiring impregnation with silver nitrate first and with a complex silver compound afterwards, which is then reduced by means of photographic developer. The decisive modification which suppressed the staining of cell bodies and dendrites completely while producing a very dense axonal network, was a prolonged treatment of the pieces of 44 Chapter 7 Fig .

42 Chapter 7 The first (Braitenberg 1978b) was based on Golgi pictures of neurons. Since the results of our scrutiny of Golgi preparations will not be presented until a later chapter, we shall simply discuss the principle here and leave the details until then. e. the Golgi stain has riot darkened too many neurons in the neighbourhood). There are two catches, however. If the picture of the neuron is projected onto a plane, as it necessarily is when it is drawn with the camera Iucida, information about the third dimension is lost.
