Example text

The human organism begins as a single cell, the zygote, which divides into two cells, then the two cells divide into four cells, eight cells ... possibly into more than 1 000 000 000 000 000 cells. These cells are not all alike. Mature red blood cells contain no nucleus, whereas sperm cells contain little more than a nucleus, surrounded by a membrane which has a tail. Many skin cells live for only a month, while most heart cells live for the life of the individual. Epithelial cells are thin and fiat, ova are large and round and some nerve cells can be more than a metre long.

This will be discussed in more detail in the Chapter on the respiratory system. Each red cell contains millions of Hb molecules. The normal adult Hb molecule is formed from two identical half molecules; each molecule contains two polypeptide chains made up of various amino acids linked together in different sequences. These chains are called the alpha (a) and beta (fJ) chains and constitute the globin portion of the molecule. There are four haeme molecules in each Hb molecule, and each haeme molecule contains an atom of iron.

This is sometimes referred to as areolar tissue and is made up of different types of cells. 6a). Loose connective tissue is similar to a dried-up sponge, in that it contains many potential spaces. These potential spaces are normally occupied by ground substance but may fill up and expand with fluid. Many times when a tissue is infected and swells, the increase in size is due to expansion of the loose connective tissue. All nutrients and wastes must pass through the ground substance which comes between the loose connective tissue cells and the blood.
