Pain is not just about intensity, but about type. Thus we have hot and cold pains, dull and sharp pains, and so on. Earlier we noted that gate-control theory suggests that pain consists of three dimensions: sensory-discriminative, affective-motivational and cognitive-evaluative. These three are reflected in the construction of the MPQ. People are asked to rate the intensity of the pain (a quantitative index), along with the type of pain experienced (a qualitative index). A person is asked to choose from a list the words that best describe their pain, and then give a rating of the intensity of that feeling by numbering each word selected.

In coldpressor stimulation tests (see page 42), women show lower tolerances of pain than men. However, women can tolerate considerable pain in certain circumstances, such as during childbirth or with painful menstrual periods. Women typically report more pain than men, and are more likely to report pain that is difficult for doctors to ascribe to a particular cause. It is, however, difficult to separate out social norms for pain from genuine differences in biological functioning. In most societies where psychological research is conducted, men are expected to be ‘tough’ and to accept pain.

They cannot ‘hear’ them consciously, but there is some evidence that people can still take in information that they are not consciously aware of. Have you ever walked down the street and thought about someone only to see them immediately afterwards? This usually happens because you have already seen them, but the fact of having seen them has not entered your conscious awareness. 4 AIM Merikle and Skanes (1992) examined the placebo effect in overweight women who firmly believed that such tapes could help them to lose weight.
