Although the ADI-R is able to identify the likelihood of autism, its validity is highly dependent on the interviewer’s training and experience with this disorder. A major disadvantage of the ADI-R in a real-world setting is that it is labor intensive and requires more administration time than most school professionals are able to allocate.

Familiarity with standardized interview measures and appreciation of the complexities of developmental change are essential for assessment and evaluation purposes. At present, the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R; Lord et al. 1994) is the most reliable standardized measure that can be used to obtain an early developmental history of autistic behaviors (Lord et al. 1994; Rutter, Le Couteur and Lord 2003). The ADI-R has been translated into 11 languages and is considered the “gold standard” parent interview that identifies symptoms closely linked to the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 (Lord and Corsello 2005).

The last two scales assess behaviors that are usually impaired in children with autism spectrum disorders. The respondent rates the frequency of the communication behavior described in each item from 0 (less than once a week or never) to 3 (several times a day or always). Interpretation is based on a General Communication Composite (GCC) and Social Interaction Difference Index (SIDI), a metric specifically designed for use in identifying a communication profile that might be characteristic of ASD.
